One of the things this business brings us is the privilege of working with items that have been made by the hands of people who are no longer with us.
Denise brought us 12 blocks of hand embroidered butterflies that her Mom had made. We were asked to assemble them into a small quilt which would live at the bottom of Denise’s bed. Looking at the varied colors of the blocks, we felt that a green and purple batik was needed to complement and enhance the threads used for the butterflies. And we wanted something that felt like a garden without using an explicit flowery print.
Each butterfly block itself is minimally quilted with our APQS Millennium longarm machine so as to maintain the integrity of the embroidery yet ensuring the stability of the block. Chris sewed a simple ribbon in the sashing and a set of swirly ‘Chrissy’ curves in the border. It is backed with a purple fabric with little butterflies all over. And we added a picture of Denise’s Mom as the label.
Denise was very pleased. As are we.
Love this idea! My aunt left me tons of embroidered pieces — tablecloths, scarves, doilies, dishtowels, aprons. I wonder if I could adapt them into a quilt somehow…
Cara, I’m sure we can find a way to use them in a quilt. Let’s talk!!
