Quilts and memories go hand in hand.
We may hold onto a quilt that was passed down from generations and think back to the people who may have snuggled under that quilt. We may be lucky enough to know the person who has given us their quilt and cherish that piece of fabric and think back to the times that were shared together. Other times we may have been the one giving a quilt to show our love and affection, to share in a joyous time of their lives, possibly a birth, a graduation, a wedding. Other times we may have been part of a healing quilt, a quilt that was made so that the recipient knew they were loved, being prayed for and supported. Each of these quilts are special; they send waves of emotion be it tears or joy.
We had the privilege of making a quilt for two daughters to give to their mom while she fought the battle of her life – ovarian cancer. The quilt was a combination of a lifetime of photos of the mom and her two lovely daughters and hearts to symbolize the love they all share for each other.
That quilt hung in her treatment room when she was in isolation, laid on her bed, slung on the chair when the thought that cancer was behind her.
The quilt now is being hung at her memorial service as yet another symbol of the love of her daughters – and the strength that she had shown for the battle that took her life.
Kathy fought this battle with fierceness and smiles, never a complaint and never a failing attitude. She taught her daughters how to be strong, how to fight and how to take care of themselves. She was a guidepost for all on grace and faith.
The quilt holds dear memories of a lifetime and symbolizes the strength and wisdom of a mother.
